Dear Families:
It is a pleasure for me to welcome you to Grinnell. I believe it is a vibrant community in which education and growth take place on a number of levels.
As parents, you will probably have mixed emotions as your son or daughter starts this experience. On the one hand you may feel excitement and pride, and on the other, apprehension or concern. These emotions are normal, but there are often very real questions that may come up at any time during the years your son or daughter is enrolled at Grinnell. To address such concerns, the student affairs staff has compiled this Family Resource Guide. I ask you to read it and keep it at hand as a guide if a problem occurs or question arises. This guide is not, however, a substitute for personal attention by someone at the College. We are ready and eager to respond to your son or daughter and to you, as parents, with any matter of concern.
It is important that you encourage your student to work with staff in the Division of Student Affairs whenever there is a need for assistance, advice, or counseling. We offer comprehensive student services so that each student will have a rewarding experience both in and outside of the classroom.
Welcome to Grinnell College at this exciting moment. Over the past few years, we have completed several major strategic projects aimed at keeping our academic and student life programs the best available in a residential liberal arts setting.
Sincerely,
Russell K. Osgood, President
Dear Grinnell College Families:
Welcome to the Grinnell College community! We are pleased that a member of your family is coming to Grinnell and we offer this Family Resource Guide as a valuable resource. As President Osgood mentioned, Grinnell is a vibrant community—a challenging and supportive environment, both in and out of the classroom.
The student affairs program complements and enhances the College’s central educational mission. A concurrent goal is to develop a positive community—within each residence hall and on campus—that reflects and addresses the broad range of student experiences and life within a rigorous academic environment. Our philosophy of student self-governance allows students to assume responsibility for themselves and their community within the residence halls, with few rules and regulations. Our student affairs staff members assist students and empowering them to make appropriate decisions.
As students develop and refine their immediate and future goals, it is essential that they take charge of their time at Grinnell. We encourage you to have your student reach out to the many faculty, staff, and fellow students on campus who are eager to help new students navigate successfully. At Grinnell, we operate on the premise that students are adults. Therefore, we work directly with them on problems they are experiencing academically or socially. The information students share with us is kept confidential. We do encourage students to talk over any problems with their family, but that doesn’t always happen. If you have any concerns, please contact us. We want do all we can to help your student be successful.
This guide is designed to provide resources regarding our community. I hope that your questions are answered in these pages. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact my colleagues and me in student affairs at 641-269-3700 or sa@grinnell.edu.Also, please visit our website at Student Affairs.
Sending you best wishes, I remain,
Sincerely yours,
W. Houston Dougharty, Vice-President for Student Affairs
