Inaugural Organ Concert
Sunday October 12, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.
Herrick Chapel
Presented as part of the American Guild of Organists International Year of the Organ Organ Spectacular Event. Performers will include College Organist and AMA Linda Bryant and student organists Harry Inglis, Kim Knudsen, Will Olson and Hannah Yourd. A variety of music will be performed, including pieces by Grinnell Music Professor John Rommereim and retired Drake Organ Professor Carl Staplin (dedicated to Mrs. Bryant) as well as music by Bach, Pachelbel, Wilbur Held, Jean Langlais, Joyce Jones, and AGO Composer Stephen Paulus. This piece was commissioned by AGO for this event.
This will be the first public performance on the restored 1948 Aeolian-Skinner instrument of 59 ranks, 5 divisions and approximately 4,000 pipes. The restoration, which began in 2006, was done by the A. Thompson Allen Co. of New Haven, CT under the guidance of Joe Dzeda and Nick Thompson-Allen. The instrument has received designation as an Historic Instrument by the Organ Historical Society. It was built during the very best period of the Aeolian-Skinner Company as the quality of the pipework and design of the instrument show.
The organ was originally dedicated in May, 1949 with dedicatory recitals by Virgil Fox. The rededication events are scheduled for April 3 and 4, 2009. The opening recital will be by Kevin Bowyer of Glasgow, Scotland who specializes in contemporary organ music. He will perform a piece commissioned by Grinnell College for this event by composer John Zorn in the recital Friday, April 3 at 8 p.m..
