Joyce Stern, Dean for Student Academic Support and Advising

Being an alum of Grinnell ('91) gives Joyce a unique perspective and ability to relate to students, staff and faculty. While a student here Joyce majored in Psychology with a concentration in (then) Computer Studies. Joyce also completed an M.A. in higher education administration from Stanford University. Her work experience has been in residence life and career development at many colleges and universities including Lawrence University, Coe College, Scripps College and California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo. In partnership with Jackie Brown (Biology) and Charles Cunningham (physics), Joyce serves as a coordinator/instructor for Aikido of Grinnell. Joyce lives in town with her partner and two adorable tabbies.

Denise Bennett, Administrative Assistant for Academic Advising

Denise is new to student affairs as of July of 2008, but has worked in ITS at the college since 1996. She holds a BA in MIS from Buena Vista University, and an AAS in Legal Secretary from DMACC. Denise was raised in Grinnell, and lives in town. Her daughter lives in Marion, and her son also lives in Grinnell. Besides acting as Administrative Assistant to the Academic Advising Office and for Houston Dougharty, the Vice-President, Denise also works very closely with the tutoring program. Denise enjoys the challenges of her new position, working with her colleagues, and meeting the students.

Hanna Lukowicz-Armstrong, Academic and International Advisor

A native of Poland, Hanna has taught Russian and Polish at The Ohio State University, Iowa State University, and Grinnell College. She has studied and worked in Poland, Russia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. Here, in Grinnell, she consults daily with students both about their academic difficulties and their personal problems, including cultural adaptation due to the transition process. She also works closely with first-year, first-generation students to help them develop better study skills, better time management, and better communication skills between faculty and the rest of the campus community. Hanna finds working with students at Grinnell College intellectually stimulating and highly rewarding.

Katie Lau, Academic Advising Counselor/Residence Life Coordinator

Katie has been at Grinnell since January 2008. She finished a Master's in Counseling from Winona State University in May of 2007 and then worked at a residential treatment center for women with alcohol and drug addictions. Katie did her graduate internship at the Counseling Center on the Winona State Campus and developed a passion for working with college students. She is originally from Wisconsin and had been living in La Crosse for the past eight years. Katie's other job on campus is as a Residence Life Coordinator for Norris, Cowles, and Dibble Halls. You can see her around campus interacting with students in many different ways.

Dotty Slick, Director of Intercultural Affairs

Academic Advising is one of Dotty's passions because she understands the importance of helping students navigate the academic landscape of Grinnell. She is well-versed in time management, test taking, and note taking strategies that can help students achieve their academic goals. Guiding students to become the authors of their own destinies is what excited Dotty about collaborative advising. Dotty sees herself as a resource and support person, who empowers students to develop a holistic approach towards their educational experience. Dotty is a first generation college graduate who completed her M.A. in student affairs from the University of Northern Iowa and her B.A. from the University of Iowa in social work. She is Mestiza that resides in Tama, IA with her partner and 10 year old Australian Cattle dog, Duke.
