Office of Interdisciplinary Studies

The Office of Interdisciplinary Studies is part of Grinnell College's Expanding Knowledge Initiative (EKI) developed during our recent Strategic Planning process.

The Office of Interdisciplinary Studies supports the implementation of the EKI by facilitating interdisciplinary teaching, research and learning among the campus community. To that end, and with the help of the faculty, staff, and students of the Grinnell College community, the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies will:

  • Build on the College's existing strengths in interdisciplinary teaching and research
  • Organize and facilitate an annual retreat for second-year students, inviting them to explore how their course of studies can best reflect their educational and life goals
  • Investigate areas of interdisciplinary learning not presently offered at the College
  • Work with individuals, departments and concentrations to develop new courses
  • Assist concentrations to re-envision current structures, with a view to addressing current and evolving scholarly and pedagogical needs
  • Explore opportunities for new faculty positions
