Federal Work Study

The Federal Work Study (FWS)/Community Service Program is an opportunity for students to earn their finacial aid award while working at a community non-profit organization or in the local schools. The goal of the program is to give students a meaningful learning experience while providing much needed help for the agencies. Our hope is that students will also serve as a link between the organization and the campus, rasing awareness of the community needs and encouraging participation from other students and campus groups.

Expectations for Students
  • Students must make a commitment to being reliable and responsible at their site.
  • Students typically work 5-10 hours a week depending on their Federal Work-Study award, but may not work beyond the eligibility stated on the approval form.
  • Students may participate for one semester or for the entire school year although preference will be given to full year participants. Summer employment is not allowed.
  • Students will be responsible for transportation to and from the community site.
  • Students may participate more than one year at the same or a different site, but must re-apply each year.
  • Students must submit time sheets signed by their site supervisor by the 25th of each month to the Office of Student Financial Aid. Late timesheets will be paid the following pay period. In addition, if the student turns in a second late timesheet, he/she may be subject to removal from the Federal Work-Study/Community Service Program.
How to Apply
  • Pick up an approval form from Pam Sittig at the Office of Student Financial Aid to verify eligibility.
  • If necessary, read through the Employment Opportunities provided by the Community Service Center (CSC) or propose another site.
  • Contact the organization (s) you are interested in to arrange an interview time.
  • When hired, have the site sign the Approval Form, keep a copy, and return the original to the Office of Student Financial Aid.
  • Begin working.
