Alternative Happy Hour [ahh]
Alternative Happy Hour is a weekly activity night for children living in one of Des Moines' low-income neighborhoods. Our kids range from 5-13 years old and we plan age-appropriate activities. We leave Grinnell at 4:45pm and return by 9:00 pm. Contact: ahh@grinnell.edu.


Community Meal Program [sjag]
The Community Meal works to build community and provide a hot meal to those who may need it and to those who enjoy the company. Served every Tuesday from 5:30 - 6:15 pm in the Davis Elementary School cafeteria, the meal is open to anyone who wishes to come. Volunteers are always needed! If you would like to help with shopping, preparing, serving, eating or cleaning up, contact sjag@grinnell.edu or shorb@grinnell.edu.


Kid's Art [kidsart]
Kid's Art is a student organization that teaches a wide-variety of art projects to kids involved in the Grinnell Middle School's after-school program. For more information, contact [kidsart].


Poverty Action Now [homeless]
Poverty Action Now coordinates trips every Saturday morning to the Catholic Worker House in Des Moines. Committed to simplicity, nonviolence, and social justice, the House is open during the day to the larger community, the poor and homeless. If you are interested in volunteering, contact pan@grinnell.edu.


Prison Writing Workshop [prison]
Grinnell College's Prison Writing Workshop is a prisoner assistance program arising out of the philosophies of Restorative Justice. Students conduct workshops on a topic of their choice each semester, providing a forum where reflective verbal and written communication skills are explored and developed. Refugee Cooperative [cscenter]
Lutheran Services in Iowa is in the process of creating a refugee community and learning center at their location in Des Moines. Volunteers are needed to give homework and life skills assistance (especially for English Language Learners), and to act as mentors to the refugees. Contact: cscenter@grinnell.edu.


Social Justice Action Group [sjag]
SJAG is a student group that works to bring about positive social change, especially within the Grinnell Community. They work on a variety of projects, including a yearly Coat Drive, Kids Against Hunger, and their biggest project, the Community Meal. Contact: sjag@grinnell.edu.


Unified Sports [unified]
Unified Sports is a program based on team sports and made up of a mixture of athletes who have disabilities and athletes who do not. In addition to developing sports skills and becoming more physically fit, participants are also given the opportunity to develop friendships that otherwise might not exist.
