  Grinnell College
Welcome to Grinnell!

...home of Grinnell College, and 9,100 local citizens who together work to make Iowa one of the top ten “most livable” states in the US. Founded in 1854, the township of Grinnell is named after abolitionist Josiah B. Grinnell, the young man to whom Horace Greeley gave his famous advice: "Go West, young man, go West."

In this unique rural setting, visitors and residents enjoy the wide-reaching internationalism of the campus along with matchless opportunity to live in one of the "100 Best Small Towns in America."

In Grinnell, you will find restaurants and coffeehouses, distinctive specialty shops, a representation of world class architecture, museums and galleries, live music and theatre, scenic nature preserves, and colorful playgrounds. On a longer visit, you will discover a safe and strong community where neighbors look out for each other, dedicate time and energy to philanthropic and volunteer activities, and actively participate in the community's civic and intellectual discussions.
