Richard Cleaver

Richard Cleaver, Writer, is the son of a long-time faculty member at Grinnell College, Charles Cleaver. He graduated from Grinnell in 1975, with majors in Music and Classics. He has an M.A. in Advanced Japanese Studies from Sheffield University (UK). Before joining the staff of our office in 2000, he lived in Japan for seven years, where he worked variously as an English teacher, technical writer, and translator. Before that he spent 11 years as Peace Education Secretary for the Michigan office of the American Friends Service Committee. He is the author of two books, New Heaven, New Earth: Practical Essays on the Catholic Worker Program (Rose Hill Books, 1993) and Know My Name: A Gay Liberation Theology (Westminster John Knox, 1995). He is an ordained Orthodox priest. Richard also writes and does editorial work for other offices at Grinnell. He participates in the College's Javanese Music Ensemble and plays hooker for the Grinnell Griffins Rugby Club (a town-gown team).
