SUSAN DUFFEY CAMPBELL '78 HONORED AT GRINNELL COLLEGE ALUMNI REUNION
GRINNELL, IA - Grinnell College recognized the professional accomplishments and service contributions of 12 alumni during Alumni Reunion Weekend, May 28-June 1 on the Grinnell campus. Alumni Award winners are members of reunion classes who have distinguished themselves in their careers and communities and embody Grinnell’s mission of life-long learning and service.
Susan Duffey Campbell, a 1978 graduate of Grinnell College from Denver, Colo., received an Alumni Award as a member of the 30th reunion class. Following is the citation read about Campbell’s accomplishments: "Great ability carries with it great responsibility. This alumna has balanced both in her work as a lawyer and as a volunteer. This alumna was an accomplished student while at Grinnell, earning the President’s Medal for her academic accomplishments. She was chair of the chemistry department’s educational policies committee and a member of the curriculum committee. Two years after the Rhodes Trust allowed women to compete for its prestigious scholarship, this alumna became the first woman from an Iowa college to earn a Rhodes Scholarship. After two years at Oxford, she went on to earn a law degree from Harvard.
This alumna is currently a partner at Holme, Roberts, and Owen L.L.P., where she specializes in defense and prosecution of wrongful discharge and employment discrimination cases. She speaks nationally on employment law and litigation. At Grinnell, she has given talks on the future of volunteerism and the role of scientists as leaders.
In addition to her career responsibilities, this alumna keeps up a full slate of volunteer activities. She serves as chair for Pikes Peak Community College Advisory Council and co-chair for the board of directors at the Women’s Resource Agency. She has also served as a board member for organizations including the Community Partnership for Child Development/Head Start and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Colorado Springs. For her willingness to serve others, Grinnell is pleased to honor Susan Duffey Campbell ’78."
