Morningstar Development Program
The Morningstar Development Program is a career development program for entry-level college graduates. It's designed to make the most of your talents, offer you engaging challenges, give you the means to succeed, and reward you when you achieve your goals.
After an initial training program, you will be exposed to customized career tracks designed for students with interests in technology, investment analysis, and general business. You will have the opportunity to work in our Advisor, Data, Individual Investor, and/or International business units. Each of these groups provides unique opportunities for mastering the key aspects of our business - from in-depth analysis of financial information to interaction with our customers. After your tour is complete, your experience, skills, and interests gained from completion of the development program will determine your subsequent positions.
To foster your success in the program, our program's advisor will help you identify your continuing education needs, as well as develop your career goals. The program features special projects, roundtables, and presentations designed to help you succeed. You will learn investment concepts and acquire entrepreneurial skills to build upon and use everyday in your new Morningstar career. Additionally, some of our participants have had the unique opportunity to work in international offices. In these rotations, you'll be an integral part of our day-to-day data operations, learn about Morningstar's international businesses, and gain a thorough understanding of international capital markets. Past participants have transitioned into roles in investment analysis, client relationship, and project management, just to name a few.
Morningstar is highly selective so candidates should have an outstanding academic record and superlative communication skills. We value both creativity and analytical ability; a varied, interesting background is a great way to catch our eye. You should have an interest in investing, but we esteem non-business and business majors equally. Finally, you'll be asked to tackle many different roles during the program, so an adaptable nature and an appreciation of variety are required. Program participants enjoy the same competitive salaries, benefits, and other perks as all Morningstar employees.
Once you have gained acceptance into the Program, you will be able to explore various roles during your first and second year in the program. Listed below is a sampling of positions:
Account Executive:
The Morningstar sales group operates in an environment that is self-directed, fast-paced, and high-risk/high-return while providing a unique opportunity to earn unlimited sales commissions on top of an attractive base salary package. You'll be responsible for generating revenue and meeting monthly individual sales goals by creating a pleasant experience for our prospects and clients.
Data Analyst:
Morningstar Data Analysts are responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of the investment data used in all Morningstar products. As a Morningstar Data Analyst, you will learn the nuances of investment products, performance reporting, and portfolio analysis, will own the data collection processes, and will manage projects focused on process improvement initiatives. The key success factor lies in building both strong external relationships with our fund data providers and internal relationships with Morningstar teams. Our Data Analysts have daily contact with mutual fund companies, insurers, custodians, and transfer agents. They are the experts regarding investment data points and Morningstar calculation methodologies, and are routinely called upon for both internal and external client data issues.
Investment Analyst:
As an investment analyst, you'll ensure that investors are equipped with detailed, comprehensive analyses of stocks to help them make informed, educated decisions. You'll intensely analyze companies' financial data and integrate that information into a cash flow model for each company you cover. As an investment analyst, you'll estimate a fair value for each stock and communicate your opinions in research reports reaching hundreds of thousands of investors. You'll join a team of outstanding business analysts who can determine what separates great businesses from the mediocre majority. You'll be expected to demonstrate a passion for investing and to possess excellent writing skills.
Product Consultant:

You'll develop strong expertise with all of Morningstar's products and services by supporting Morningstar's large customer base across all product lines. You'll be expected to effectively manage your time between client phone calls, emails, and special projects. You'll stay apprised of product changes, enhancements, and new releases to provide valuable feedback and insight to product managers for continuous product enhancement.
