Grinnell Singers Fall Concert: A Tribute To Ralph Vaughan Williams 2 p.m. Bucksbaum Sebring-Lewis Hall (104); Tags: Campus The Grinnell Singers, the College's premier vocal ensemble, will perform a program of British choral music celebrating the 50th Anniversary of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The centerpiece of the program is his "Mass in G minor" for soloists and double choir and the program includes renaissance music by Byrd, Tomkins and Gibbons, and twentieth century part-songs and spirituals. Called "witty, charming, and passionate" in UK reviews, this play toured England last spring. Devised from research and community interviews by actors from England's Out of Joint Theatre Company, its subjects, immigration, religious/cultural freedom, and "Britishness", are explored by characters with strongly diverse viewpoints. As students in an English as a Second Language class prepare for the new British Citizenship Exam tensions grow, challenging the beliefs of its "merlot liberal" teacher. Humor, searing debate and the deft interweaving of stories combine to question identities in the post-9/11 world. Tickets are available from the Bucksbaum Box Office, 269.4444

Chamber Ensemble Concert 4 p.m. Herrick Chapel; Tags: Campus The Chamber Ensembles’ Fall Concert, directed by Nancy McFarland Gaub with additional coaching from Claudia Anderson, will perform an exciting group of quartets and trios on their fall concert. The program will begin with a beautiful early string quartet of Mozart, played by Laura Wolfram ’10, Laure Berthon, Harry Inglis’09, and Megan Januska ’12. Schubert’s great masterpiece, the "Death and the Maiden" string quartet, will be performed by Will von Geldern ’11, John Zehnder ’12, Greg Uyeda ’11, and Gabrielle Robinson-Bajuscik ’11. Thomas Huang ’09, Darren Chen ’09, and Xiaohan Wu ’12 are performing a trio by the under-rated composer Louise Farrenc, who lived in 18th-Century Paris. And the program will close with the Piano Trio, No. 2, dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust, by Dmitri Shostakovic. Nicole Bridgeland ’11, Pippa Hoover ’10, and Kate Brynilds ’12, will play this dramatic masterpiece. The program is free and open to the public.

Science and sandstorms: Grinnell Corps Namibia 2007-08 8 p.m. ARH 120; Tags: Campus Namibia is a country of open spaces and desert-adapted organisms, ancient traditions and accelerating development, inequality and complex racial identities. It is also home to Gobabeb Training and Research Centre, an ultra-remote arid-ecology research station and annual worksite for two Grinnell Corps fellows. On November 24th, Jaimie Adelson ’07 and John Guittar ’07 will give a presentation on their recent year at Gobabeb. The talk will cover living and teaching in the Namib Desert, working for an African non-profit, the impact of a growing uranium industry, sandstorms, floods, and other trials and treasures. Pictures, anecdotes, and advice for prospective applicants will also be in high supply. Refreshments will be served.

PHYSICS SEMINAR SPEAKER: Victor Colussi 12 p.m. Noyce Gale Physics Classroom (1023); Tags: Student Victor Colussi '09 will be the featured presenter. His talk is entitled: "Quantum Information theory and SIC POVM's" Abstract: This talk will be primarily focused around Quantum Information theory and one of its most famous open problems. Topics such as quantum cloning, entanglement, and teleportation will be addressed in varying depth. Also, an emphasis will be placed on the unique role of the quantum state in QIT. The second half of the talk will deal with the open problem of constructing a symmetric, informationally complete positive operator valued measure or a SIC POVM. The presentation is a product of a Summer 2008 REU in mathematics at Susquehanna University and a prolonged visit with Christopher Fuchs at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Fulbright Scholarship information meeting 8 p.m. ARH 305; Tags: Student The Fulbright Scholarship offers college graduates the opportunity to study at a foreign university for one year. Most grantees plan their own programs. Projects may include university coursework, independent library or field research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination. Along with opportunities for intellectual, professional, and artistic growth, the Fulbright Program offers invaluable opportunities to meet and work with people of the host country, sharing daily life as well as professional and creative insights. The Fulbright Program offers a variety of grant opportunities, including comprehensive Fulbright grants and Fulbright travel grants. Additional grants are available on a country-by-country basis, including opportunities in teaching and business. The Fulbright Program currently operates in over 140 countries worldwide. International students who have received their undergraduate education in the US are generally not eligible for a Fulbright to continue study in the US or elsewhere. This information session will cover the basics of the Fulbright Scholarship program, including Grinnell's nomination process. Next year's on-campus deadline for applications will be in mid-September. While this information meeting is intended for members of the class of 2010, students from all graduating classes are welcome and invited to attend.
