Grinnell College is trying to reduce the amount of SPAM and viruses being sent to students, faculty and staff. Part of that effort has been to suppress the delivery of many types of attachments which are prone to carrying viruses.

That effort however will block legitimately sent attachments occasionally. Grinnell College apologizes for the inconvenience this causes, for the sender and the recipient.

We have created this page as a means to ensure that legitimately sent attachments can be received with as minimal of inconvenience as possible, while still allowing us to protect our users.

The following is a list of extensions that Grinnell College does not allow as attachments in email:

*.COM;*.EXE;*.BAT;*.DLL;*.SCR;*.PIF;*.VBS;*.CPL;*.HTA;*.DRV;*.BIN;*.OVL;*.SYS; *.COMO; *.JS; *.JSE; *.VBE; *.WSF; *.WSH; *.WSWH

If you were expecting to receive an attachment with any of the above extensions, you will need to have the sender resend the file using the following steps:

1) rename the file extension to an extension that is not on the list above. For example, rename a file runme.exe to runme.yourname

2) Whenever possible, zip the file up to compress size of the attachment

3) Include in the text of the email what the renamed file should be renamed back to, for example, stating that runme.yourname should be renamed to runme.exe.

When you receive the email, you will then be able to:

1) Unzip the file (if it was zipped)

2) Rename the file to the proper extension

3) Launch the file as needed

Following the above procedure should ensure that you are able to receive legitimately sent attachments.
