Subject: Student initiative to make Grinnell old-growth free

Date: 22 September 1999

Dear President Osgood:

The Campus Advisory Committee on Environmental Concerns (i.e., the "Ecocampus Committee") supports the student-led initiative to make Grinnell College old-growth free. The initiative identifies a significant environmental concern, as harvesting wood products in ancient forests presents demonstrable threats to global biological diversity and nutrient cycling, and ultimately threatens human populations. The initiative represents a practical and meaningful way in which Grinnell can follow its ethic of social responsibility by making sound choices in using forest products. The Committee offers its assistance in defining and implementing the old-growth-free initiative.
