National security experts will speak at Grinnell College this fall as part of a National Security
Network series on Iowa college campuses.
The National Security Network, based in Washington, D.C., is a foreign policy organization dedicated to strengthening public understanding and support of international relations, global affairs, and national security.
National security experts who will visit Grinnell include:
- Sept. 8, 7:30 p.m.:
- Robert Scher, an associate of Booz Allen Hamilton government consulting, will present "China on the Rise—What's Next?" Scher has more than 17 years of experience in the Departments of Defense and State, specializing in Asian security alliances and decision-making for military operations.
- Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m.:
- United States Institute of Peace advisor Alex Thier will discuss "Afghanistan: The Forgotten War." Thier worked as a U.N. and non-governmental official in Afghanistan from 1993–96, where he was the officer-in-charge of the coordination of humanitarian assistance in Kabul.
- Sept. 29, 4:15 p.m.:
- From the Center for American Progress, senior fellow Brian Katulis will present "Transnational Challenges to Security." Katulis' work focuses on national security policy in the Middle East, Iraq, the Arab-Israeli Conflict, and Pakistan. He recently published "The Prosperity Agenda," a book on U.S. national security.
- Oct. 7, 4:15 p.m.:
- Daniel Benjamin, director of the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution, will offer perspectives on "International Terrorism." Benjamin served more than five years on the National Security Council staff as director for transnational threats. His current research focuses on Islam in Europe and the evolution of Jihadist terrorism.
All events are held in the Joe Rosenfield '25 Center, Room 101, located at 1115 8th Ave. on the Grinnell College campus. The speaker series at Grinnell, sponsored by the College's Rosenfield Program in Public Affairs, will also be presented at the University of Iowa, Cornell College, and Drake University.
