Carroll College used a big second half to snap the Grinnell College women's basketball team's four-game win string Friday night with a 75-57 victory at Waukesha, Wis.
Grinnell trailed just 30-25 at halftime before the hosts went on a 45-32 tear in the second half to improve to 10-2 in the Midwest Conference and 16-3 overall. Grinnell fell to 5-6 in the league and 7-11 in all games.
Grinnell's Hannah Wolf '08, last week's MWC Performer of the Week, led all scorers with 18 points while also grabbing nine rebounds. Also in double figures for the visitors were Mallory Scharf '11 and Kate Norton '11, who had 10 points each. Norton and Jessica Vaverka '11 also had five rebounds apiece. Crystal Hoewisch had 13 points to lead Carroll.
Carroll never trailed in the game and gradually built its lead to 11 with 3:27 to go in the first half. But Grinnell refused to fold, going on an 8-0 run as Jessica Shotts '10 hit a 3-pointer and Wolf followed with a trey and layup to make it a 28-25 Carroll lead. Carroll followed with a basket for a 30-25 edge heading into halftime.
A quick start to the second half ended being the key to the game, as Carroll went on a 13-2 run for a 43-27 cushion with 14:25 to go. Grinnell never got closer than 16 the rest of the contest.
The Pioneers continue their road trip Saturday with a game at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis. Game time is 2 p.m.
