Pioneers Pick Up Two League WIns at Knox

An offensive explosion in game one and timely hitting in game two gave the Grinnell College softball team a pair of conference victories over Knox College on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers took the opener 9-0 in five innings before squeaking out a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Grinnell took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one before erupting for three runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and finishing off the game with three more in the fifth. The Prairie Fire struggled to get base runners as Lee Anne Steinberg '07 picked up her fourth win of the season, allowing just one hit in four innings of work, while striking out three. Chloe Moryl '10 went the final inning and allowed just one hit.

Darcy Ward '09 continues her solid hitting, recording two hits, including a pair of doubles, while driving in three and scoring three. Emily Stewart '08 went 3-for-3 in the contest with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Tess Cohen '09 chipped in with a pair of hits and two RBI, as Julia Reese '10 picked up two hits and Megan Germer '08 drove in two runs.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers got RBI singles from Ward and Emily Kolbe '07 in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Knox responded, however, with two runs of its own in the top half of the fourth inning to even the score at 2-2. Reese then picked up the game-winning RBI in the bottom half of the fourth inning when she drew a bases loaded walk to score Sandra King '08, and give the Pioneers their fifth win in the last seven games.

Kolbe, Ward, Cohen, and Madison Salander '08 picked up two hits apiece, while Steinberg picked up win number five by going four innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five.

The Pioneers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they stay on the road to face Illinois College in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
