Pioneers Fall 7-0 and 5-2 to Lady Blues

The Grinnell College softball team scored just two runs against Illinois College on Saturday afternoon en route to a pair of tough conference losses, 7-0 and 5-2, to the Lady Blues.

The Lady Blues broke open game one by putting up a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to the 7-0 victory.

The Pioneers recorded just six hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles from Emily Kolbe '07. Madison Salander '08, Darcy Ward '09, Emily Stewart '08, and Maddy Raimando '08, collected one hit apiece for the Pioneers, who left six runners on base.

Lee Anne Steinberg '07 suffered the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out three. Tess Cohen '09 came on in relief and went the final 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.

In the nightcap, the Lady Blues jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning before Chloe Moryl '10 singled to center, scoring Sandra King '08, and pulling the Pioneers to within 2-1. Illinois College then scored one run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead, while each team traded runs in the sixth.

Kim Durinick '09 recorded a pair of hits for Grinnell, as seven others chipped in with one hit. Steinberg picked up the second RBI in the contest, while Megan Germer '08 scored the second run.

Stewart suffered the loss for Grinnell, going six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out four. Steinberg closed out the game by pitching a perfect seventh.

Grinnell falls to 7-11 overall (5-4 MWC) and returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Loras College in a 3:00 pm doubleheader.
