Pioneers Wrack Up 11 Top-10 Finishes During Dick Young Classic
The Grinnell College men's track and field team finished in fifth place at Saturday's Dick Young Classic. The Pioneers wracked up 52 points, while Nebraska Wesleyan stormed to the team championship with 232 points.
For the day, Grinnell charted 11 top-10 finishes, including a pair of champions. Willie Stewart '08 picked up another win in the javelin with a throw of 184' 5". Nick Sparr '09 was the other champion, winning the 10,000 meter run in a time of 32:48.99. David Montgomery '10 also ran well in the race, finishing third, with a time of 33:05.99.
Tommie Jamison '09 took ninth in the 800 meter run (1:59.09), while also capturing third in the 1,500 meter run (4:03.26). Charlie Knuth '08 placed fifth for the Pioneers in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:20.58 as teammate Mike Horrell '09 finished 10th at 16:35.14. Sam Calisch '10 captured a sixth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 10:23.71.
The Pioneers placed eighth as a team in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 44.80. Mike Hargadine '09 (12' 11.5") and Hugh Redford '10 (10' 11.75") round out the top performers on the day by finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, in the pole vault.
The Pioneers are scheduled to return to competition on Friday, April 27, when they take part in the Kip Janvrin Open, hosted by Simpson College.
