Pioneers Take Fourth, Kieselbach 3rd, at MWC Golf Championships
Pete Kieselbach '10 fired a round of 77 on Saturday during the final day of the Midwest Conference Men's Golf Championships, but was edged in a one-hole playoff to finish in third place individually. The Pioneers turned in their best round of the championships (322) to finish in fourth place overall.

"Day three basically turned into a shootout vs. St. Norbert minus what Pete was doing, said Head Coach Brian Jaworski. "He was in medalist mode and his threesome had a different feel than the other groups. But make no mistake about it, we as a team were tied with "Norbert and we wanted to come out on top. The guys responded and I knew we would. This is one-hella-vu TEAM, and we had a good year. Maybe next year will be our GREAT year. Our nucleus is solid and we have some irons in the fire so we'll see how high we can climb in the years to come."

Kieselbach went out in 39 before firing a 38 on the back nine to lead Grinnell. Carlos Lu '10 shot a 79 while R.J. Roewe '09 followed with an 81. Ryan Long '07 and Joe Fox '08 shot rounds of 85 and 89, respectively, as Trek Langenhan '07 rounded out the scores for the Pioneers with a 94.

"Pete is great guy, a super good player, and a classy, competitor, Jaworski added. "For a guy who was playing in his first MWC Championships at a course he has never seen, paired with a two-time MWC Champion on day one and two and still put up three rounds in the 70's was and still is impressive."

Doug Middendorf led wire-to-wire to take the individual championship, finishing with a final round score of 75. David Marquardt shot a low-round of 74 before knocking off Kieselbach on the first playoff hole to finish second.

"Personally, he [Kieselbach] is one of the very best athletes I have ever coached at being fiercely competitive ALL the time and positive 99% of the time," Jaworski said. "He is excellent at playing to his strengths and then his mindset keeps him in the moment. He does his mental homework and comes out to play his game. He's good. He's real good and I am proud that he made a name for himself over the weekend. He wasted no time introducing himself to the MWC and that is important."

The Fighting Scots shot a final round of 309 to take the team title by 19 strokes over 2006 champion, Knox.

"In order to play this golf course well, you must hit many precise shots both in accuracy and distance. Our guys felt good about their play going into the Championships and I think we as a team feel good about what we accomplished--we rated our team performance as a B+."
