Temperatures may have been frigid outdoors, but basketball action was sizzling hot in Darby Gymnasium Monday night during a thriller between the Grinnell College Pioneers and Monmouth College Fighting Scots.
Sparked by a career-high 39 points by Bobby Long '09, the Pioneers worked past Monmouth 114-113 in overtime to aid their charge of making the Midwest Conference Tournament. The hot-shooting Long hit nine 3-pointers on the night.
David Arseneault '09 added a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists, while John Grotberg '09 had 20 points and five steals. Ahmed Idrissa '09 tallied 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Keith Chamberlain '08 - making his first appearance after sitting out since before the holiday break with an injury - had two blocked shots. Monmouth got 18 points from Joe Terwelp.
Grinnell improved to 9-5 in the MWC with the win and is 14-7 in all games, while Monmouth dipped to 6-9 in the MWC and 6-15 overall.
Monmouth came out on fire, breaking out to a 9-0 lead while holding command virtually the entire first half. Grinnell's first lead came at 44-43 on a 3-pointer by R.J. Roewe '09 with 2:10 left in the half. The Pioneers' only other lead of the half came when Roewe hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds for a 51-48 cushion at intermission.
The Fighting Scots went up by as many as six midway through the second half, but again Grinnell fought back and twice took leads of five points, the first at 95-90 on a 3-pointer by Long with 5:47 to go and again at 103-98 on another trey by Long with 3:45 left. But Monmouth hung close and eventually forced a 107-all tie when Scott Scholten hit two free throws with :15 left. Grinnell set up for a final shot, but couldn't convert to force overtime.
Grinnell broke out to a 111-107 lead in the extra period when Chamberlain and Arseneault each hit two free throws. Monmouth then rattled off four straight points to force another tie. Chamberlain scored on a layup with 2:14 to go to put Grinnell up by two, but Monmouth sank two free throws to force another tie at the 1:52 mark. Long then scored what proved to be the winning point with a free throw with 1:06 left. Grinnell had a chance to pad its lead, but missed two free throws with :27 left. Monmouth then set up for a final shot and actually got off two shots, but couldn't convert as the Pioneers' defense held firm for the victory.
The Pioneers play their final regular-season home game at 7 p.m. Wednesday when Knox College visits. From there, Grinnell wraps up the regular season with a contest at Illinois College Saturday.
