A big second half paved the way for the Grinnell College men's basketball team in a 103-88 victory at Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon .
The contest also was special as two Pioneers, David Arseneault '09 (left) and Bobby Long '09 (right) both jumped into the Grinnell 1,000-point club. Each scored 26 points on the day - Arseneault needed just a single point entering the game to get to 1,000 and Long only two. Arseneault was a perfect 12-of-12 on free throws in the contest. Others in double figures were John Grotberg '09 with 15 points and Augustus Karisch '11 with 11. Arseneault also had eight assists.
The Pioneers, who trailed 49-43 at intermission, stayed in strong contention for qualifying for the Midwest Conference Tournament with the victory. Grinnell opened the second half with an 11-2 flurry. Long started the spurt with a 3-pointer, while Ahmed Idrissa '09 and P.J. Mahaffey '11 also hit treys and Long sank two free throws for a 54-51 Grinnell lead.
The hosts stayed close, trailing just 75-74 with 7:16 to play. But a big 15-6 run all but sealed the deal for the winners. Mahaffey started the surge with a 3-pointer, Arseneault sank two free throws and Alex McDonald '11 had a layup. Arseneault added to the spurt with a jumper, R.J. Roewe '09 had a trey and Arseneault had another basket and Mahaffey a free throw. Grinnell cruised from there for the win.
Grinnell, 8-5 in the Midwest Conference and 13-7 overall, hosts Monmouth College at 7 p.m. Monday and Knox College at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Lake Forest is now 7-7 in the league and 11-10 overall.
