St. Norbert College took a 64-44 halftime lead on its way to a 123-106 victory over the Grinnell College men's basketball team Saturday afternoon in De Pere, Wis.
Grinnell had five players score in double figures, led by Bobby Long '09 with 25 points and David Arseneault '09 with 21. Both inched very close to the 1,000-point mark for their careers with their outputs, as Arseneault now stands at 999 points and Long at 998. John Grotberg '09 added 18 points in the game for the Pioneers, who are 7-5 in the Midwest Conference and 12-7 overall, while R.J. Roewe '08 and Ahmed Idrissa '09 had 12 each. Arseneault also had seven assists, while Long and John Grotberg '09 had three steals each. Eric Bieniasz had 34 points to lead the Green Knights, who are 8-5 in the MWC and 12-8 in all games.
Despite the outcome, Grinnell owned the early portion of the game by shooting out to a 12-5 lead. Mike Schmidt '08 began things with a 3-pointer, while Idrissa added another trey and Grotberg two more for the seven-point lead with 17:24 to go in the first half. But St. Norbert came back and eventually tied the game at 14-all and took the lead to stay shortly after that. Grinnell hung close, though, and was within one at 31-30 on a trey by Grotberg with 8:04 to go in the half before St. Nobert rebounded for a 20-point halftime lead. Grinnell got as close as 11 a few times in the second half, but no closer.
The Pioneers have a week off before traveling to Lake Forest College for a game next Saturday.
