The Grinnell College men's basketball team shot out to a 10-0 lead, but host Carroll College rallied to go up 57-42 by halftime on its way to a 126-114 victory Friday night.
Mike Schmidt '08 (pictured) of Grinnell reached a milestone in the game, becoming the 17th Pioneer to hit the 1,000-point mark for his career. He needed seven points to do so entering the game and tallied eight.
John Grotberg '09 scored 40 points for Grinnell, while Bobby Long '09 had 23. Both had six 3-pointers. R.J. Roewe '09 also hit double figures with 19 points on five 3-pointers, while David Arseneault '09 had nine assists. Ryan Mueller led six Carroll scorers in double figures with 26 points.
With the win, Carroll improved to 9-3 in the Midwest Conference and 13-5 overall. Grinnell fell to 7-4 and 12-6.
Grinnell's fast start was led off by Thomas Davis '10, who scored on a layup. Grotberg added two free throws, Augustus Karisch '11 hit a 3-pointer as did Grotberg for a 10-0 cushion. But the hosts answered with a 13-point run to take the lead. Grinnell still hung close, taking an 18-17 lead on a 3-pointer by Ahmed Idrissa '09, before Carroll grabbed a 24-18 lead. The lead got to as big as 19 in the first half before Carroll settled for a 57-42 margin at intermission.
Grinnell started the second half in impressive fashion and got the gap down to three. Trailing by 10 points, Grotberg hit five consecutive free throws and Roewe a pair to bring the visitors within 74-71 with 14:14 left. Carroll then stretched the lead to nine before Grinnell countered with an 11-2 run to tie the contest at 85-all with 10:13 left. P.J. Mahaffey '11 and Schmidt had layups in the run, Arseneault and Grotberg made two free throws each and Roewe connected on a 3-pointer.
However, Carroll came back with a 10-2 run to pull away for good. Grinnell managed to get as close as five points at 118-113 on free throws by Grotberg with 1:39 left, but couldn't get any closer as the hosts held on for the victory.
Grinnell continues its road trip Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis.
