The Grinnell College men's basketball team returned to its winning ways Saturday afternoon, disposing of Beloit College by a 104-92 score in Midwest Conference play.
The Pioneers, who snapped a three-game losing streak while forcing 29 turnovers, improved to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the league. Beloit fell to 2-12 in all games and 0-7 in MWC play.
Grinnell had four players score in double figures, led by a 29-point output by Bobby Long '09 (pictured). John Grotberg '09 added 23 points, David Arseneault '09 added 16 and Mike Schmidt '08 scored 12. Arseneault also dished out eight assists, Schmidt and P.J. Mahaffey '11 had six rebounds each and Long came up with four steals. James Weber tallied 24 points for Beloit.
There were two ties in the game, the last being at 27-all midway through the first half. But then Grinnell went on a pivotal 23-6 run to take a 50-33 lead at the 4:33 mark of the half. Grotberg had 10 points during the run, including a pair of 3-pointers, Long added five points, Kale Knisley '11 tallied four and Arseneault and Patrick Laine '08 had two each.
The Pioneers led 60-41 at intermission and led comfortably the rest of the way. Beloit did cut the gap to eight late in the game, but never got any closer as the Pioneers went on to victory.
The Pioneers now return for a pair of home games. Ripon College visits Darby Gymnasium at 7 p.m. this Friday and Lawrence is at Grinnell Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
