Redlands works past Grinnell men's basketball team

The University of Redlands posted a 108-100 men's basketball win over Grinnell College Sunday afternoon in Redlands, Calif.

The contest, which marked a homecoming for former Redlands coach and current Grinnell volunteer assistant Gary Smith, was tied 48-all at halftime before the hosts went on a 60-52 run in the second half.

John Grotberg '09 led Grinnell with 20 points with the aid of 8-of-20 3-point shooting, Bobby Long '09 tallied 21 points and Mike Schmidt '08 poured in 17. Grotberg also had three steals, David Arseneault '09 and Long dished out four assists apiece and Long also had four rebounds. Matt Loretz led Redlands with 25 points, while Daniel Markus added 16.

Redlands led by as many as 12 points in the second half before Grinnell rallied, coming within one at 78-77 on Grotberg's 3-pointer with 10:03 left in the game. Twice after that Grinnell took a one-point lead, the first time at 80-79 on a 3-pointer by John Bruns '10 and again at 82-81 on a layup by Long with 8:28 to go. But Redlands answered with a 15-2 run for a 96-84 lead with 3:24 left and never looked back.

Grinnell, 8-2 on the season, hosts Lake Forest College at 3 p.m. Saturday in Darby Gymnasium. Redlands improved to 5-6.
