Sharp-shooting Pioneer men's basketball team wins in California

It seems only natural that just as the Grinnell College men's basketball team moved to the warmer weather of California, the Pioneers' shooting would be red-hot.

Grinnell shot 63.8 percent from the floor in the first half and 58.2 percent for the game on its way to a 137-84 victory over Caltech Saturday afternoon at the Braun Center in Pasadena.

Leading Grinnell's charge was Bobby Long '09, who was 13-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-8 from the 3-point line, on his way to scoring a game-high 35 points. John Grotberg '09 was right behind with 32 points, while David Arseneault '09 added 13 points and Mike Schmidt '08 tallied 11. Arseneault also dished out 10 assists, Long had eight steals and Grotberg came up with seven steals. Bryan Hires had 32 points to lead Caltech.

Grinnell led just 16-15 before breaking open the game with a 16-4 run for a 32-19 lead midway through the first half. Long had 11 points during the spurt, including a pair of treys, while John Bruns '10 also had a 3-pointer and Schmidt a basket. That helped the Pioneers take off for an 80-49 halftime lead. The Pioneers continued to cruise after that, outscoring Caltech 57-35 in the second half.

Grinnell, 8-1, plays at the University of Redlands Sunday Sto conclude its California trip.
