Grinnell Outdoor Orientation Program

Just prior to New Student Orientation, we hope to be offering three or four canoe expeditions of 5-days in length for incoming students. This is great way to meet other first-year students while learning about Grinnell from upper class student leaders. Each trip will consist of five to six new students and two upper class leaders. All leaders have had a great deal of training and experience. The trips themselves will take place in northern Wisconsin, with a day of training at Grinnell prior to departure. The total experience is 8 days.

While this trip has much to offer, it may have its hardships. The average canoeing day is about five hours, but some could be much longer. Most trips will have portages requiring participants to carry a canoe or heavy pack for up to half a mile. Each night the group will be staying at fairly primitive DNR campsites. The weather can range from calm and sunny to cool and rainy. Mosquitoes and other insects can be persistent. Participants must be both physically and emotionally able to cope with these conditions. All trips will be free of alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs.
