Phonathon

What is Phonathon?
Phonathon is an annual program run by the Pioneer Fund in the Office of College and Alumni Relations. We hire several dozen students and train them to call alumni, parents, and friends of the College in order to build relationships and raise money for Grinnell. Phonathon starts in September and runs for most of the academic year.

Why do students work for Phonathon?
Because they love Grinnell and want to help it. They also realize that helping Grinnell is helping themselves. Last year, the Pioneer Fund as a whole, of which the Phonathon is an important part, raised approximately $1,750 per student. That money was spent on everything important to students and to Grinnell - great professors, diverse social and cultural events, promising internships, research and off-campus study opportunities, and of course financial aid. Working the Phonathon gives students a chance to give something back to Grinnell in a very tangible way, and to know that they are making a huge difference. It also lets them talk with over 50 years' worth of Grinnell alumni, giving them a chance to learn about our school's past, hear first-hand accounts of stories they never believed were true, and maybe even network their way into an internship or job after graduation.

How successful is Phonathon?
Phonathon is successful. Last year, 3,350 people gave over $400,000 through Phonathon. That is 16% of the dollar total and over 35% of the donor total for the entire Pioneer Fund.
