  Grinnell College

During the second half of the semester I worked for an NGO that focused on the welfare of immigrants. This charity or national voluntary organization, as they call it, employs solicitors, barristers, and public policy workers, among others. Only about 20-30 people are employed there full time, allowing it to be a close-knit and innovative group. Their focus on "campaigning for justice and combating racism in immigration and asylum law and policy" influences other similar groups around Great Britain as well as media coverage. During my weeks there I set up a library for the policy team and went to meetings, seminars, and public training sessions. I became a part of this team of highly motivated and intelligent crew. When it came time for me to leave, they gave me presents, flowers and took me out for a night on the town. But most importantly, I became well learned in working for better public policy. Likewise, I experienced the joy that comes with feeling influential in a field of work in which I truly believe. My future plans include working for the rights of displaced persons in an international setting. Also, my former boss is interested in having future Grinnell-in-London student's work with the organization.
