  Grinnell College

I'm interning in the editorial department of a financial magazine, "Britain's best-selling personal finance magazine." I work from 10 AM to around 5:30 PM, and my duties include: opening mail, answering letters, typing letters and replies for the writers and editors, researching for the features writers, writing reviews of books for giveaways, contacting columnists with queries, answering and directing phone calls. While at first I felt as though I would never see the end of the typing and filing, my duties have expanded, and I'll be taking on some more writing responsibilities by the end of the semester. The office atmosphere is very pleasant and friendly after one gets past the initial reservations. In addition, the editor is an American who once studied abroad in the UK, and so he has a better understanding of my situation than most British employers. Since the office is of an open design and the staff is small (13 people), I've been able to observe the various parts and stages of magazine production and have a much better grasp of the process than I would if I were trapped in a single office. On the whole I've enjoyed my internship very much. Note: this student had an article published international in this magazine.
