Choosing "Selective Access" allows more advanced users to request specific series combinations. Once you have found the series you are interested in it can be saved to your hard drive as a text file for use with a spreadsheet or statistical package. For more information on converting data found on line for use in Excel (initially...then we may want to discuss other packages as well) see "Converting Statistics from Netscape to Microsoft Excel"
Choosing "FTP Site" offers access to large datasets the BLS makes available. These files must be "unzipped" once they are downloaded onto your hard drive. See "Using Compressed Files" for more information on uncompressing files.

National Income and Products Account - This site at the University of Virginia offers graphical representations of National Income and Products Account data obtained from STAT USA: "National income and product accounts (NIPA) show the value and composition of the Nation's output and the distribution of incomes generated in its production. The accounts include estimates of gross domestic product(GDP) - the market value of the Nation' s output of goods and services - in current and real terms, GDP price measures, the goods and services that make up GDP in current and real terms, national income, personal income, and corporate profits. In addition, BEA produces specialized measures such as estimates of auto and truck output, GDP of corporate business, housing output, and business inventory and sales. Estimates of gross product originating by industry are prepared annually in current and real terms. Measures of the inventory and fixed capital stocks consistent
with NIPA output measures are also provided. Further, the accounts provide a consistent framework within which estimates of analytic interest - such as the role of research and development in the U.S. economy or the interaction of the economy and environment - can be studied." From http://www.lib.virginia.edu/socsci/nipa/nipa.html, paragraph one.

About the data: Most data available through STAT USA is reported by other Federal Agencies. If you do not find the precise data or information you are looking for in STAT USA you may want to check if it is available at the site maintained by the agency that produces the information.

Most of the information available from STAT USA is in flat text file formats. This means they can be saved to your computer's hard drive to be used with a word processor spread sheet- or statistical package. Often there are paragraphs of explanatory information that must be removed before a spreadsheet or statistical package can effectively read the data, but this is easily done using a word processor. Some of the larger collections are downloaded as compressed, self-expanding files. These files will have the extension .EXE. You can uncompress them once they are on your hard drive by double clicking on the file name. For more information on converting data found on line for use in Excel (initially...then we may want to discuss other packages as well) see "Converting Statistics from Netscape to Microsoft Excel".
