The Grinnell Science Project is committed to
developing the talents of all
students interested in science and mathematics, especially those from groups
underrepresented in the sciences—students of color, first-generation college
students, and women in physics, mathematics and computer science.
Enrollment is offered to students from under-represented groups who express
interest in science or math and who will be first-year students at
Grinnell. Our main goal is to help students to get an
effective start at Grinnell.
Students participate in the Program in three ways:
- A pre-orientation in August, the week before New Student Orientation.
- Special meetings and activities throughout the academic year
- Research opportunities for students

Pre-orientation
The pre-orientation helps students gain early insights into Grinnell:
- Students meet the faculty who teach introductory science and mathematics courses and who will advise you as you choose classes and help you identify your strengths.
- Students learn about the range of campus services and resources available. Discussions about academic planning, study strategies, and registration planning, plus hands-on computer workshops, will put students a step ahead when classes begin.
- Students participate in a laboratory exercise, write a short research paper, and engage in collaborative problem solving.
Reunions
Students participating in the Grinnell Science Project see their friends all over campus— in the residence halls, in science classes, in the dining hall—throughout the first year. Additionally, the project offers reunion activities. These special programs bring the whole group back together to focus on topics that help make the most of your time at Grinnell and allow you to have fun. For example, in recent years participants have discussed adjusting to Grinnell, learned about strategies for finding summer research and internship opportunities, gone bowling, and enjoyed the company of friends.
Research Opportunities
By building relationships with faculty, the Grinnell Science Project provides an avenue for early entry into Grinnell’s active and successful student research program.
- Grinnell’s summer research program is a model for other schools. Students have an opportunity to carry out independent scientific research mentored by a Grinnell faculty member. Many of our graduates attribute their successful careers in science to having done real science each summer.
- Nearly 70 percent of Grinnell science majors go on to earn graduate degrees, and many are recognized nationally with prestigious pre- and postdoctoral awards.
- We believe the innovations of the Grinnell Science Project benefit all science students at Grinnell.
