The Center for International Studies and the Department of Spanish were pleased to
host International Visiting Scholars, Anatxu Zabalbeascoa and Javier Rodriguez
Marcos, for a 3-week short course during September, 2002.
During this minicourse, Spanish Cinema, Culture and Society, students watched and
analyzed recent Spanish films and were asked to discuss how they reflect different
aspects of current life in Spain: urban development, immigration, social stereotypes,
etc. The films were in Spanish without English subtitles. Instruction was in Spanish.
Anatxu Zabalbeascoa and Javier Rodriguez Marcos are journalists, who work for
El Paiīs, the most respected and widely read Spanish newspaper. Javier directs the
Cultural Supplement, Babelia and Anatxu writes about architecture in a regular
column.
Approximately ten years ago, Ms. Zabalbeascoa participated in the University
of Iowa Writers Workshop, at which time she visited Grinnell College as a Department
of Spanish guest.
