Faculty Development Opportunities
The Center has supported a number of faculty group and individual initiatives in pursuing development
opportunities in the area of internationalization. CIS has funded and sponsored summer curricular development
workshops, funded individual attendence on faculty development seminars sponsored by other organizations, and has
also supported, organized and funded its own faculty development seminars. To date there
have been four seminars to date--in London, China, Southern Africa, and Japan. We have developed a model which effectively
prepares faculty for an in-depth seminar experience, and which then
integrates that experience in various ways into the teaching, scholarship and service. For a description of each seminar, a list of faculty

Grinnell and Nanjing University
Grinnell College has enjoyed a long standing relationship with
Nanjing University.
It has involved both students and faculty since 1985.
Students benefit from the Chinese language instructors who come each year,
and from the Grinnell
Corps Nanjing Teaching Fellowship,
in which Grinnell graduates teach in China for the year after graduation.
Grinnell College Faculty Teaching Fellowship
Faculty are invited to apply to teach at Nanjing University each spring,
as part of our exchange with that institution.
Since the program’s inception, over 25 faculty have traveled to China.
Usually two professors are sent each year.
Faculty teach for four to five weeks, from late May to mid- or late-June.
Nanjing University requests approximately sixteen hours of teaching, or
eight two-hour lectures given over the period of the faculty member’s stay.
Anyone interested in teaching at Nanjing University is encouraged to speak to
the Director of the Center for International Studies, or members
of the Nanjing Committee (see below), most of whom have
taught there in recent years. In addition, the Center for International Studies has on file
reports from these and other participants about their experiences there (these will eventually

Application Process
Faculty applying for the program should submit a one-page statement of intent
to the Center for International Studies, Mears Cottage. Applicants should briefly discuss
their interests in the program, the course they would like to teach, and any other relevant information.
Generally speaking, applications should be submitted by November 30 of the fall preceding
the summer they would like to participate in the program.
