The John R. Heath Professorship

 
 

Endowed in honor of John Reardon Heath, Grinnell class of 1919, who was an active member and President of the Grinnell Board of Trustees and gave steadfast support to Grinnell's long and continuing engagement with the world, the Heath Professorship brings to Grinnell College the most distinguished international figures for a semester-length stay. Heath Professors teach two courses during their stay on campus and are housed in an existing academic department.

Konstanty Gebert (Poland)
The John R. Heath Professor for 2007-08


Konstanty Gebert is an international journalist based in Warsaw. During the Communist rule of Poland, Gebert was an underground activist and writer, using the the pen name of Dawid Warszawski. In 1989 he joined the independent daily Gazeta Wyborcza, where he is columnist and international reporter. He is a frequent contributor to other Polish and international media, including the BBC, and has covered events such as the Bosnian War, Russia, and Latin America. At Grinnell, Professor Gebert will teach a course on "Media and Ethnic Conflict," and another on "Comparing Genocides"
