CERA Summer Restoration Jobs 2008
Both positions FILLED.


Description: These 10-week, full time (40 hours/week) summer positions require a willingness to work outdoors under adverse conditions (heat, bugs) on restoration and maintenance activities at Grinnell College's Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA). The interns will be supervised by CERA manage, Larissa Mottl, and CERA field technician, Bob Groenendyk.

Tasks include: (1) Controlling invasive plant species by hand-pulling and applying herbicides. (2) Assisting with research projects (one on partridge peas, another on using goats to control invasive plants). (3) Conducting biological inventories of butterflies, aquatic invertebrates, plants. (4) Monitoring bird nest boxes and snake coverboards (5) Curating natural history collections. (6) Mapping using GIS software and a GPS unit. (7) Assisting with data entry. (8) Maintaining trails. (9) Photographing various habitats and seasonal changes in vegetation. (10) Watering plants in the CERA greenhouse. (11) Planting plugs of native plants and field watering. (11) Assisting with summer tours and workshops.

The position pays $8.25/hour. The starting date is Monday, June 2, 2008. You must be able to provide your own transportation to/from CERA.

Academic Year Opportunities

CERA Student Assistant Positions: '08-'09 Academic Year
FOUR Student Assistant Positions Available

Four student positions are available, two during fall semester and two during spring semester, to assist the CERA Manager with field work (including tree removal, prescribed burning, GPS mapping, vegetation surveys, seed collecting, seed cleaning), and data management and analyses (including Microsoft Access database development and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping). The fall positions start Monday, Sept 15 and end Friday, December 12, 2008. The spring positions start Monday, January 26 and end Friday, May 1, 2009.

Work Schedule. Work Schedule. Assistants will be expected to work 4 hours per week (@ $7.50 per hour), except during campus recesses. Work schedules will be flexible but preference will be given to individuals available from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. at least one day per week. Much of the work will be conducted at CERA and transportation will be provided.

Applications. Applicants that have taken biology courses with lab components at CERA, and have experience with computer spreadsheet and database applications will be given preference. To apply for a position for either semester, send

Internships

Center for Prairie Studies Environmental Education Internship. The purpose of this internship is to provide training and experience in the development and implementation of environmental education programs in the Grinnell area. The intern, with guidance from an education faculty member, will design a program on environmental topics that may include activities such as field trips, special events, workshops, and performances. The program may focus on a specific grade level, or provide opportunities for families and children to learn together, or offer environmental awareness and learning experiences suited primarily for adults. The intern will be encouraged to form collaborations with individuals from local school districts, conservation organizations (Tallgrass Prairie Audubon Society, Iowa Prairie Network, County Conservation Boards), Grinnell College's Conard Environmental Research Area, Rock Creek Lake Alliance, youth group leaders (4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the Galaxy) and community enhancement organizations such as Imagine Grinnell.
